Gymnastic Funtastic!

Last term in PE we did Gymnastics, and focused on our balance.  We used the beam, trampoline, box,  mat, skipping ropes and hula hoops.  It was heaps of fun, and we improved a lot!  Here is a movie that Katie and Kate made of us.

Let's Make Music

Welcome back to Term 4!  I hope you all had a great holiday, I know I did. :)  This term is going to be busy, busy busy!  Our unit is: Let's Make Music.  Sounds exciting doesn't it?!  We're also going to be learning about lots of different types of poetry.  So get those thinking hats on ... I want to see some awesome poetry.

Speaking of hats ... this Term is a "Hat Wearing" term - so make sure you bring your hat to school (or leave it in your tote tray).  If you've lost your hat you can buy a new one from the office.

Swimming is this term as well - yahoo!!  We will be swimming in Weeks 3-4 and 7-8.

Hiya,

The two school songs for next weeks Whole School Assembly (the last one for the term) are:
Ticket to Ride - by the Beatles
Somewhere Over the Rainbow - by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole
We are extremely lucky to have a super talented teacher at school has recorded her version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow.  Here is her version as well as Israel's, and the Ticket to Ride song as well.

Cafe Time

We made some magic menus in class, and decided that we needed a cafe to put them to the test.  We thought about the different jobs in a cafe: cooks, waiters and waitresses, people to make coffee and tea, people to take the money, dishwashers, and customers.  Then we voted on a cafe name.  And the winning name was:
ROSETOWN CAFE!

Here are some pictures of our cafe in action (P.S. Thanks to Amelia and Grace for bringing all their cafe equipment in!) ...

Island Bay Marine Education Centre

Today we had an awesome trip to the Island Bay Marine Education Centre.  Someone must have done a sun dance for us, because the weather was gorgeous (maybe a little bit chilly but that's ok!).  Victor & Judy at the Centre were fantastic, showing us some awesome sea creatures - both in the rock pools outside and inside "the bait house".  Check out their website: http://www.octopus.org.nz/ They have open days on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month - definitely worth a visit again.  We got to touch heaps of starfish, sea cucumbers, crabs and lots more.  We also got to feed the fish and the turtles.  Here are some pictures of the day ...

There was a sneaky wee octopus there too who decided to move from one tank to another by squeezing through a hole.  The hole was tiny, about the size of your fist.  We'd seen it on you tube clips, but it was cool to see it for ourselves.  He can squeeze through the hole because octopus don't have bones.  Check out the video I took of it ...

Argh - Dress Like a Pirate Day!

Argh me hearties ... On Friday Kowhai Syndicate had "Dress Like A Pirate" Day ... and there were plenty of dastardly looking pirates out there!  Those landlubbers were all a mite scared!  We sung a song at assembly, made pirate flags, drew treasure maps and munched our lunch on the 'poop deck' (otherwise known as the verandah!  It was a great day me hearties ... check out these pics ...

Finn's Holiday Pics at the Pet Porpoise Pool

Finn went to Australia with his family and visited the Pet Porpoise Pool in Coffs Harbour.  They took some awesome photos ... check them out.  One of the photos is of a seal putting rubbish in the bin.  One of the staff at Porpoise World said to make sure everyone knows that: "The biggest threat to sea life is made by humans.  We pollute the water ways with chemicals (such as oil and detergent) and rubbish (such as plastic bags and fishing lines)."  So DON'T LITTER!!

Our Personal Portraits in the style of Amedeo Modigliani

We drew pictures of ourselves.  They are based on the European artist Amedeo Modigliani, using pastel and dye.  Amedeo Modigliani was famous for his elongated and elegant portraits, painted in Paris back in the early 1900s. The heads and necks were long and narrow, giving his subjects a very graceful look.

Kowhai Syndicate Camborne Walk

It was a gorgeous day for the Kowhai Syndicate Camborne Walk.  We had lots of fun walking through the bush and along the Pauatahanui Inlet to the beach near Paremata Bridge.  After munching on our lunch we played a few running races, then had some games such as a treasure hunt and sandcastle building.  Finally it was time for the walk back to the car - there were a few tired people!  Thanks to all the parents who came and helped on the day.  Here are some pics from our class.

How does Room 8 get to School?

We have been learning about different types of ways to graph information in Maths.  Last week we looked at how Room 8 got to school.  We made a block graph - here are our results.  It was a rainy day so maybe that's why so many of us came to school by car!
